CAMP LOCATION: The CYO Girls Camp and CYO Boys Camp have been in operation since 1946 and are owned and operated by the Catholic Youth Organization. The camps are located approximately 6 miles a part on the shores of Lake Huron near Port Sanilac. As traditional camps, the beautiful landscape and sandy beaches are the ideal setting for an incredible summer as we provide an opportunity for campers to discover a sense of self, an appreciation for others and nature, and to feel the presence of God.

CAMP FACILITIES: We offer modern cabins, tipis, and opportunities for kids to sleep under the stars. We are on the shores of the beautiful Lake Huron, a Michigan great lake!

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: There’s a community “up north” carved from ice cold glacial melt water many, many years ago, nestled with lush forest over which gulls and herons soar. It rests on the sandy beaches of a most wondrous, great lake.

A community of safe places; Girls, boys, and co-ed summer camps for kids, protected just for children by guardians who never forgot what it was like, once upon a time, to be children themselves. Two camps, just 6 miles apart, denoted by their sounds—waves lapping on the shore, warm summer breezes blowing across crackling campfires—and everywhere, the undercurrent of children’s laughter punctuated, now and then, by shouts of glee and wonder.

A changeless constant in the lives of those lucky few of us who’ve come to grow up, here, through the generations. This is a place where the days are almost timeless, but for the extra-special moments to grow in our Catholic faith for over sixty seven summers now.

When night comes, we’ll tuck ourselves in under warm blankets and count the billion stars or so that light up the sky. Or we’ll sneak a flashlight under the covers to finish a good story or recall the days’ events with new friends. When it storms, we’ll throw open the windows to smell the fresh rain and listen for the raindrops pelting the lush forest leaves.

Picture For boys and girls of those magical ages of 7-16, these are places to take your aim at the archery range, challenge your limits on the high ropes course, and build creativity through arts; of open-air cabins, floating in kayaks, and the timeless treasure of campouts. It’s the simple and lasting pleasures that teach us the appreciation for others, nature, and to feel the presence of God.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Limited camperships are available. Please request an application if help is needed.

FAMILY CAMP SESSION(S): Family Camp weekends include Sunday Mass and time to grow and experience our Catholic faith with families just like yours. Mother/Daughter and Father/Son Weekends available! Our top comment is always, "I loved spending time with my daughters/nieces/stepdaughters." So come on up and join in our relaxing activies while we do all the work! We are happy to serve you!

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Special events such as an annual Scrap-a-lot and Haunted Forest are amoung our favorites!

We’re a community of camps that takes the best of the traditional programs that CYO Girls Camp, CYO Boys Camp, Camp Ozanam and Camp Stapleton have to offer, ads a lot faith in action, and gives you one of the best camp experiences for your child, your family, or your next event!

Camp counselors and seasonal staff members are the heart and soul of our camps; Working with and living in a camp comunity where children see, hear, and imitate everything we do 24/7! All staff must provide a high level of energy and enthusiasm in cabins and in activity areas, and be dedicated to the "organized chaos" of camp life.

We are seeking individuals who posess a genuine love for children and exude the highest standards of spiritual maturity and moral conduct. Staff that meet these demands will find the work extremely rewarding - No, life chaging! We expect either a four or six-week committment depending on which of our camps you will be working at this summer. This committment includes a one-week, paid, staff training session.

HISTORY- Chicago Youth Centers (CYC) is Chicago's largest independent, locally based, multi-site youth services organization. It was founded in 1956 by two visionaries, Chicago businessmen Elliott Donnelley and Sidney Epstein, who wanted young people living in poverty to have an alternative to the streets.

CYC was born out of three boys' clubs that had fallen on hard times. With the merger of the American Boys Commonwealth Club and the Boys Brotherhood Republic in North Lawndale together with the South Side Boys Club (later renamed the Elliott Donnelley Youth Center) in Bronzeville, a new city-wide agency was formed: Camp Rosenthal has benefited thousands of Chicago children, ages seven to 15, since 1962.

Camp offers urban youth an opportunity to gain team-building, leadership and social skills as well as a sense of belonging and responsibility through hiking, sailing, canoeing, swimming and campfire storytelling.

PHILOSOPHY - At CYC’s Camp Rosenthal, our goal is to teach independent life, skills that each camper can take back home and implement into their daily lives. It is our hope that at the end of each camp session, we have changed a life or possibly saved a life by offering a service that is not obtainable back at home.

SUMMER CAMP JOBS:
When looking for summer employment there are many camps to choose from, but which camp is the right one for you That is an important question to ask yourself when looking for a summer camp job. Picking the right camp can determine whether you have a great summer or decide that you never want to work for a summer camp ever again.

When selecting a camp for employment think about these questions;

What is the mission of the camp? Does that mission resonate with your beliefs? What kind of camp is it? Who do they serve and what kind of program is offered to the campers? Where is it located and how long has it been in-existence? Will you be able to handle the environment? Does it have a rich history? How invested is the organization or Camp Director in the camp? In other words are things falling apart at the camp or do they have the essential items in order to run an efficient program? How many staff from previous summers come back? Does the camp have a high ratio of returning campers?

All of these are important questions to ask when interviewing with a Camp Director and asking these questions shows that you are truly invested in where you spend your summer. The answers you receive may help you select a camp that is the right fit for you, but will they guarantee that your summer will be flawless with nothing but sunny days, no stress, good sleep, children that will listen at all times, amazing food, great communication between you and your co-workers, no sun burn, tons of fun, no homesickness, good sleep... Oh wait I said that already... The answer is....... NO!

While all of those questions are important to ask, the truth is your experience is what you make it and depends on how much you dedicate yourself to your role and the camp community. If you as a staff member have no interest in making the summer camp experience for your campers a memorable one then what is your purpose and how are you fulfilling the camp philosophy? What is your primary goal as a staff member and how much are you willing to invest your time and energy into your program?

Some of my best counselors when I was a camper made camp memorable by investing their time in me, by motivating me to step out of my comfort zone or by observing me and knowing exactly when I needed a nudge to bring my best foot forward. I wanted to be around that kind of counselor because it was usually that counselor who believed in me, even when I had lost all belief in myself. On the outside looking in I never really knew what stresses my counselors were facing, but I am sure they had their share of adversity as a camp counselor because it is the one job that will challenge you and help you discover things about yourself you never knew.

After years of being a camper, staff member, and a Camp Director I've come to realize that campers and staff go through the same situations every summer. For example, Campers get home sick, staff do too - Campers get nervous and stressed, staff do too - Campers have sleepless nights, staff do too - Campers get sick of the repetitive food, staff do too - Campers don't always agree with their peers, staff don't too - Campers have moments of wanting to give up and go home and guess what? Staff do too!

The only way you will truly know if you made the right decision is at the end of the summer when you reflect on your summer, look back at your experiences, take the good, the bad, and sometimes the ugly and say to yourself... I can't wait to come back next summer! And guess what? Campers will too!

Here are the jobs we are currently recruiting for our 2014 Summer Camp Season.

Participants will set the schedule, control the route, and are given the freedom to develop their own games and activities while on our programs.

Participants will sleep in tents (excepting sailing programs, where accommodations are typically on the boats themselves). Participants will typically travel daily, learning to prepare their own meals on fires and camp stoves, setting up their own schedules, learning outdoor skills (survival skills, map and compass, etc...), and learning about group dynamics.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Crystalaire has been offering alternative outdoor adventure education experiences for almost a century. Our staff are highly trained, and will have lifeguarding and wilderness medicine certifications as well as prior experience. We believe in creating playful and inclusive trips in wild places that offer meaningful experiences for all participants. We consider each trip to be a "microsociety," and give our participants the chance to weigh in and decide how they want that "microsociety" to function, how they want people to be treated, and how they want group decisions to be made.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: 16 and 17 year old campers are welcome to join us on our Cojourn, a 3-week outdoor leadership intensive that focuses on our group management and social dynamics curriculum. More information can be found online.

During Sing On The Lake, every camper loads into canoes and paddles across the lake to serenade our friends at Little Switzerland Resort. Session III is perfect for campers who are staying two weeks, but have friends who are only coming for one week.

During Session III we have two week cabins and two week units. Most of our unit campers (7th grade and above) choose to stay for two weeks.

Holdover - July 19-20 (1 day, 1 night), $85

Ages 7 years - 11th grade

For some campers, two weeks of Camp Newaygo is just not enough!

For those who want to attend three or four weeks of camp, you can attend Session III (both weeks) or Session IIIB (the second week) and Session IV.

The holdover option allows you to do that, without having to travel home. During holdover, we'll spend the day at Lake Michigan relaxing, preparing for the next two weeks. You may do laundry at this time (available only to campers selecting the holdover option).

Session IVA - July 20-26 (7 days, 6 nights) $514

7 years - 7th grade Only

This one-week long session is for "cabin" campers only (7years-7th grade).

During this session, campers choose three classes, and attend those three classes all week long. Campers can learn how to use a pottery wheel, perfect their tennis serve, and learn how to fence like Captain Jack Sparrow. Our one-week campers can look forward to evening programs like Capture-The-Flag, All Camp Scavenger Hunts, and lots of campfires.

Most of our campers during this session are experiencing Camp Newaygo for the first time.

Session IVB, July 27-30 (4 days, 3 nights) $308

7 years - 7th grade Only

Our Second Mini-Camp of the summer is perfect for girls just getting started at overnight camp. Mini Camp is tailored specifically to elementary and middle school kids. Girls will chose three different activities each day, letting them see everything Camp Newaygo has to offer. If your daughter has never been away from home before, this is a perfect way to ease your family into summer camp. Our mini campers choose three new classes every day - so they get to sample as much of Camp Newaygo as possible. Our mini campers do not go on an overnight camp-out, and instead spend the entire week in our Adirondack cabins.

We have two Mini Camps each summer - our first mini camp in June includes an early bird discount of $10!

Session IV All, July 20-Aug 2 (14 days, 13 nights), $928

Ages 7 years - 11th grade

When Camp Newaygo Alumni look back on their best memories of summer, they think about Session IV. Somewhere between outdoor cooking experiments and listening to the rain fall on your tent, lasting friendships are built.

All girls attending Session IV will stay for two weeks. During that time Wakonda (girls entering (9th and 10th grade) and Pioneers (Girls entering 11th grade) will head to the Manitou Islands for the backpacking adventure of a lifetime. Girls in younger units will also enjoy trips down the Pere Marquette or the Muskegon River. You will take part in ceremonies that date back generations, including the Candle Dipping Ceremony, Wishing Boat Ceremony, and the final campfire where the camp torches are lit and the summer Logbook and its honorees are presented. If youre looking for two weeks of camp packed with unbelievable evening programs, unique traditions, wild campouts, and unforgettable friendships then Session IV is for you!

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The Road Less Traveled as an organization was founded by Jim and Donna Stein in 1991, and has been successfully running safe, exciting, life-changing trips for teens ever since. Both Jim and Donna are still the current directors, and are integrally involved in every single aspect of the company. In the summer, they are on call 24/7, available both to parents as well as to our leaders in the field.

We are an ACA accredited organization with an impeccable track record. We believe in the process of accreditation. It allows us to compare our standards to other professionals in the industry. Our accreditation allows us to follow specific standards related to leader screening including use of application forms, reference checks, personal interviews, work history review, and background checks.

Many years ago, we were the first company serving young adults to require that all leaders have a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) medical certification. WFR training is far more advanced than standard first aid or wilderness first aid. In addition to this certification, we carry extensive first aid kits on all of our programs that include antibiotics and epinephrine. Contents, protocols, and standing orders are reviewed and updated every year by our Medical Director who is an MD.

Since our inception, RLT has been on the cutting edge of technological advances in communication. We began carrying Iridium satellite phones on all of our programs as soon as they were available. Today we continue to carry the latest in emergency communication systems. According to geographic location, programs are equipped with satellite phones, ground-to-air radios, and/or cellular phones providing the possibility of 24-hour access to medical help in case of emergency.

We use a combination of free time, intentional programming, and activities to add additional opportunities for growth among our campers. Instead of movie nights, electronic games or motorized sports, campers and staff work together to create imaginative games, sports and special events. We focus on activities which foster active, individual participation and group involvement.

CAMP INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERED:

Activities during either the morning or afternoon could be focused on a specific skill instruction (sailing, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, swimming, mountain biking, art, sports skills, or similar activities) or may be a bit more flexible and subject to the spontaneity of the camp community (creating a large outdoor sculpture, organizing a theme meal, working on a creative writing project, designing and building a fort in the woods, organizing a talent night, or rehearsing a play). Evenings tend toward larger group activities including games such as Capture the Flag, Windego Island, talent night, fantasy night, or a campfire. Or, there may be 2 or 3 choices ranging from very active games to quieter, smaller group activities.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Van Buren Youth Camp has been known since 1950 for its successful residential summer camp programs for children and teens. These programs are designed to develop the leadership abilities of today’s youth — encouraging personal growth, self-confidence, positive relationships, and individual and group responsibility.

All staff are certified in CPR/AED/First Aid and properly certified/trained for their specific area of responsibility. They have gone through extensive training in child development, camp safety, recreational games, team building and magic making. All Program staff must be at least 18 years old. Cabin Counselors are volunteers from our Leadership Workshop (or have counseled for us in the past). Both groups must go through an application and interview process, provide letters of recommendation/references and clear required background checks.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Our Leadership Workshop is a one of a kind amazing program! Our high school age campers volunteer to assist with the planning of the week each year. From selecting the theme, to developing topics for General Sessions and Clinics, to recruiting the speakers to present this information to the group...they are involved in every aspect of the program development. There are no cabin counselors at Leadership Workshop...the campers select a different "Counselor of the Day" who will take on additional responsibilities and meet with the Leadership Counsel. The week is designed to see how far we can stretch them outside of their comfort zone while trying to foster a sense of community responsibility. To Lead Is To Serve is our "motto" but the theme of the week each year is different. This is the first session offered each year and where we recruit our volunteer Cabin Counselors

We also offer a CIT opportunity. Counselors In Training volunteer alongside a Cabin Counselor for the majority of the week. On the last day of the session, the CIT will take over the leadership of the cabin to get a real taste of making the decisions and coaching the group through the daily schedule.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:

We offer full or partial "camperships" of 25, 50, 75 or 100% of tuition coverage is available based on need. Please follow the financial assistance link on the home page of our website for details.

FAMILY CAMP SESSION(S): The last weekend of September each year is Women's Wellness Weekend (W3). This event is designed for women to come together in a nurturing environment where we do all the cooking and cleaning! We also provide wellness sessions/professionals, yoga, massages ($), manicures/pedicures/facials, craft classes, hiking, biking, and bird watching. Spend the weekend alone with a good book, with friends playing cards or join in on the group activities...it is your weekend to do whatever rejuvenates You!!! Check out our website for details.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Leadership Planning Committee/Advanced Leadership is the only program we offer all year. These kids, in addition to planning the Leadership Workshop, help us to give back to our communities by supporting local organizations that support school age children and their families.
